We had to make some internal changes in AppleWorks to make version 4 possible. These changes affected the TimeOut series of AppleWorks add-ons developed by Beagle Bros. We've included new versions of TimeOut Utilities and Paint on the AppleWorks 4 disk, but most other applications need to be updated.
Dan Verkade has written a TimeOut Updater application which will modify many of your existing applications. To use it, follow these steps:
All users
Make backup copies of all of your TimeOut disks. TimeOut Updater will destroy your working copies in order to update them. If anything goes wrong, you will be able to start over again using your backups.
Hard drive users
Use the Installer to install AppleWorks 4 on your hard drive. The new TimeOut directory will be created automatically.
3.5" disk users
Make a copy of the AppleWorks 4 disk and use the copy. There is some room on the disk for additional TimeOut applications, especially if you delete any unnecessary files (see Errata).
5.25" disk users
If you have multiple TimeOut disks, make copies of them so you can insert the appropriate disk when the TimeOut Updater requests a specific application.
All together now
----------------
1. Activate TimeOut as explained in the AppleWorks 4 manual.
2. Restart AppleWorks so TimeOut reads in the default applications.
3. Use the "Install Inits or TimeOut files" option on the AppleWorks File Activities menu to copy the original TimeOut application files to your new TimeOut directory. This version of the Updater can convert the applications listed below:
File NameVersion
----------------
TO.CALCULATOR1.x
TO.GRAMMAR 1.x
TO.MEASURE2.0
TO.PAGE.PREVIEW1.x
TO.SUPERFONTS3.0
TO.THESAURUS2.0
TO.UM.COMPILER2.2
TO.UM.OPTIONS3.0
TO.U4.M2M1.1
NOTE: The last three applications are from the UltraMacros 4.2 disk. If you have an older version of UltraMacros, you'll need to get an upgrade from Quality Computers before you'll be able to record and compile your own macros in AppleWorks 4. If you used the installer to put AW 4 on a hard disk, and then updated UltraMacros 4.2, you can also use the Install option to copy the I.DEBUG init from the /APPLEWORKS/AW.INITS directory.
4. Now that the originals applications are in place, select Utilities from the TimeOut menu.
5. Insert the /EXTRAS Sample Files disk.
6. Select 7. Add Applications from the Utilities menu.
7. Press the up arrow to highlight ProDOS directory and press Return.
8. Enter "/EXTRAS/TO.UPDATER" (not the quotes) and press Return.
9. Select TimeOut Updater from TimeOut menu 2.
IMPORTANT! Restart AppleWorks and you'll have access to your updated applications. If you don't exit AppleWorks and restart, you'll have problems.
You can run TimeOut Updater more than once. If you need to run it again, refer to the above version chart. If TimeOut Updater displays errors as a result of incorrect version numbers, consult the chart to see if the application causing the error has been updated already.
A new TimeOut Updater will be released in November or December which will convert additional old applications. The Updater will be available online, or directly from Quality for a shipping and handling charge.
